Coventry City make Viktor Gyokeres stance clear amid Leeds United interest

Coventry City have not received any offers or inquiries for Leeds United-linked striker Viktor Gyokeres. That’s according to Coventry Live, who are reporting that the Championship club would be unwilling to part with their top scorer in the January transfer window should an approach be made.

Leeds are known to be looking for a forward, with Georginio Rutter the man being spoken about most at this moment in time. However, while United are keen on the Frenchman, they are considering other options as well, with Gyokeres thought to be one of the players on their radar.

The Sweden international has bagged 12 league goals for the Sky Blues this season, placing him second in the Championship’s goalscoring charts, behind Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom. As such, it’s no surprise that Gyokeres is being linked with move to the top flight, but the Whites might not the only side considering a move for the 24-year-old.

Everton, Brentford, Wolves and Fulham have also been credited with interest in the forward, with a fee of £18m being touted. Coventry have not received any contact regarding interest in him, though, according to the report and the club have made their stance clear if a Premier League club were to reach out this month.

Mark Robins has been unflinching in his responses when asked about the striker’s future in recent weeks, insisting: “Viktor is going nowhere. I can tell you now he is going nowhere in January. Absolutely no chance. I’ve spoken to Vik.”

That's a statement that has been echoed by Doug King, who looks set to complete his majority takeover of the club imminently, after moving to ease supporters’ fears of a sale this month. It seems Coventry’s resolve hasn’t been tested just yet, but as the transfer window gathers pace they will be braced for more speculation.

Despite spending four seasons with Brighton and Hove Albion, Gyokeres has never played in the Premier League, but his form in a Coventry shirt over the last two seasons will have many suggesting he is ready for the step up. The forward has bagged 31 goals in all competitions during his time with the Midlands club, with his latest coming on Saturday night against Wrexham in the FA Cup.

Leeds have already moved to strengthen in the January window, securing the signing of Max Wober from Red Bull Salzburg, but they are keen to add to their attacking ranks this month, too. Rutter is one man being considered and Hoffenheim have made the decision to pull him out of training and their friendly match with Servette this afternoon amid the speculation.
