The Atlanta Falcons are 2-2 after Sunday’s comeback win over the New Orleans Saints. Despite leading for much of the game, the Falcons offense simply couldn’t put the Saints away and needed a 58-yard field goal from Younghoe Koo to escape with a 26-24 victory.
The offense failed to score a touchdown, but the defense and special teams units each chipped in a score. Wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge recovered a muffed punt in the end zone and linebacker Troy Andersen recorded a pick-six off a tipped pass from Derek Carr.
Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins didn’t have his best day, passing for 238 yards and one interception. After the game, Cousins expressed his disappointment in the offense’s performance.
“I didn’t feel like we did our part on offense to give him a better opportunity but he bailed us out,” Cousins told sideline reporter Megan Olivi. “Great kick by him. Great job by Mooney getting the PI. It’s great in this league to find a win any way you can.”
The Falcons can’t be mad about getting a win over the Saints, but there’s no doubt this offense needs to play better. As Cousins explained, you can’t count on being bailed out by the defense or special teams units every week.
“It’s huge to have the special-teams touchdown, the defensive touchdown,” said Cousins. “We’ve got to pick it up on offense a little more, red zone, but we had some improvement. We were better on third down. Great to get a win and we’ve got to build on it.”
Atlanta rushed for just 88 yards against a stout New Orleans defense on Sunday. Bijan Robinson was held in check, rushing for 28 yards on just seven attempts. Tyler Allgeier had more success, finishing the game with 60 yards on eight rushing attempts.
The Falcons have a short week before their Thursday night matchup against the 3-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5.
