Free agent guard Courtney Vandersloot is set to return to the Chicago Sky, the team that originally drafted her in 2011. Vandersloot's agent confirmed the news, stating that the veteran guard will sign with Chicago after spending the past two seasons with the New York Liberty. WNBA free agents are not permitted to sign contracts until February 1.
Vandersloot holds the title of Chicago's all-time assist leader and ranks second in WNBA history behind Sue Bird. Her contributions were instrumental in helping the Sky secure their first WNBA championship in 2021. Now, she is poised to bring her veteran leadership to a young Chicago team led by frontcourt players Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. The Sky also have a new coach, Tyler Marsh, this season and hold the No. 3 pick in the upcoming WNBA draft.
During the previous season, the 35-year-old guard clinched her second WNBA championship with the New York Liberty. Vandersloot made a selfless decision midway through the season, transitioning from a starting role to coming off the bench to support the second team.
Off the court, Vandersloot faced personal challenges as she mourned the loss of her mother, Jan, who passed away from cancer in June. Despite the difficulties, Vandersloot's stellar career includes five All-Star appearances and leading the league in assists seven times. She is also actively participating in the new Unrivaled 3-on-3 league.
While considering her options, Vandersloot engaged in discussions with multiple WNBA teams. In a lighthearted moment, she mentioned her preference for IPA beer and humorously suggested that a team presenting her with a pack of IPA might have an advantage in recruiting her.
Vandersloot, who attracted interest from Seattle and Golden State, boasts career averages of 10 points and 6.6 assists. Her return to Chicago is anticipated to further strengthen the team's roster and enhance their prospects for the upcoming season.
