After a quiet 2022 campaign in his first season with quarterback Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton has emerged as Wilson’s favorite target.
Sutton already has five touchdown catches through seven games, just one score shy of his previous career high with ten games remaining. He is a reliable weapon in the red zone and a leader on offense for the Broncos.
“I think Courtland — he’s been clutch,” Wilson said after last week’s win against the Packers. “He made a huge down-the-field catch early in the game. He did a good job of winning a couple of times early and then late too, as well as the game went on. He’s a consummate pro. When you talk about professionals — a guy that comes in every day [with a] smile on his face, confident, a guy that leads. That’s why he’s one of our captains.
“I think a guy that no matter what the circumstances are, he’s always going to believe. He’s one of my favorite teammates that I’ve played with because he goes up and down the sideline just bringing energy, talking to guys, letting them know what we’re going to do. He’s like that every day. He’s a great leader. He’s a great competitor. He made some clutch plays [and] that was exciting.”
Sutton, 28, leads the team in targets (43), receptions (31), receiving yards (351) and receiving touchdowns (five) so far this season. He is clearly Wilson’s favorite target, presumably making him less likely to be moved ahead of the NFL trade deadline than some of his teammates.
