Courteney Cox says Matthew Perry 'struggled for a while' as she talks Friends pressure

Courteney Cox has spoken out about her Friends co-star Matthew Perry and admitted he "struggled for a while".

During an interview with The Sunday Times, 57-year-old Courteney spoke about the much-loved TV series - which turned her into a household name playing Monica Geller - as well as the 2021 reunion.

The One Where They Get Back Together saw Courteney and Matthew reunite with Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc for a highly-anticipated one off show hosted by James Corden.

"It was fantastic to see everybody again, reminisce and realise how much fun we had," Courteney said of the reunion.

When tuning in, fans noticed that Matthew's speech was slurred and that he appeared forlorn during chats with James and the cast.

At one point, the actor admitted how he had desperately fed off the live audience's reaction during the filming of Friends, where he played Chandler Bing.

"For me, I felt like I was going to die if they didn't laugh," he said, describing how he'd "freak out" if a line fell flat.

Referring to his comments, Courteney told The Sunday Times : "That was a lot of pressure he put on himself. That's a lot to think how much he relied on that for his own self-worth."

The mother-of-one then added: "He's just struggled for a while. I think he's doing great now."

Asked if she ever gets fed up of talking about Friends, Courteney replied: "No, that was such a huge part of my life.

"It was such a lucky situation that I fell into the show, and I went through so many things in those 10 years."

Speaking about the close relationship she has with Jennifer and Lisa, Courteney said: "We're just really comfortable. We've shared so much history together and we laugh.

"Lisa's laugh alone is the most infectious laugh I've ever heard. It's adorable. We have deep conversations, we also have silly times," she added.

Courteney is now gearing up for her latest TV role which sees her play the part of Pat Phelps in horror comedy series Shining Vale.

Pat is a former wild child who became famous through writing raunchy female empowerment novels, and is caught cheating on her husband.

The episodes will follow the dysfunctional family as they move from the city to a small town and into a house where in the past, terrible atrocities have taken place.
