A footy-mad couple have flown 3,000 miles to go to the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley – just to sit at opposite ends of the stadium.
Caroline Oatway is a Manchester City fan but husband Shaun Littler is a diehard Sheffield United supporter.
The couple, both 32, watched from their home in Boston, US, as the teams were drawn to play against each other at Wembley. When they realised they were visiting family in Britain at the same time, they bought tickets.
The pair will travel to the stadium separately on Saturday with friends and family but will meet for a friendly pre-match pint “to wish each other luck”.
Caroline, originally from Manchester, admits it will be a “long flight” back home next week for the supporter of the losing team. She said: “I hope City win. On paper they should but football doesn’t work that way.”
City have won all four matches between the sides since the pair have been together.
When United had a goal disallowed in 2019, journalist Caroline said Shaun had a face “like thunder”. Shaun, who works in financial recruitment, said they didn’t want the draw at first.
He said: “Then we realised what a great day it will be.”
Shaun, from Sheffield, thinks United will lose “by four or five goals”, but added: “My heart says you never know.”
