Couple's last day on holiday ruined by 'Scouse stereotype' remarks

A couple had the last night of their holiday ruined by a man shouting stereotypical and derogatory remarks about Scousers towards them.

Catherine Kemp, 57, and her partner Stephen Rice, 56, were enjoying a weekend away in the Lake District when they popped into a pub called the Crafty Baa in Windermere for a drink.

The couple, from West Derby, said it was the last night of their holiday when Stephen, who used to be a singer, realised there was an open mic night on in the pub and decided to have a go.

But Catherine said Stephen's song was soon interrupted by the sounds of a man, who was a Manchester United fan, shouting insults at him.

The man's outburst was captured on camera by Catherine, who got her phone out to record Stephen singing.

Catherine told the ECHO: "I didn't even know he was getting up and all of a sudden he was singing and then I heard this man shouting.

"I was videoing Stephen but then I heard [the man] say 'I hate Scousers.'

"He talked about Scousers robbing purses - just the stereotypes of what gives us all a bad name."

Catherine said: "It was just not nice when you're enjoying yourself and you're having that in the background.

"When I confronted him he said it's not about Liverpool, it's about football - so he changed it from us being robbers to it was about the football."

Catherine said Stephen went up to sing another song after the incident but the shouting put him off so he stopped part-way through.

The couple left the pub soon afterwards and said it "took the shine off" their holiday on what was their last night in the lakes.
