Couple on Channel 4's 24 Hours in A&E leave 'heartbroken' viewers in tears

Channel 4's 24 Hours in A&E left viewers heartbroken during the first show of the program's new series as a 92-year-old received a heartbreaking diagnosis. The first episode, titled 'Tales of the Unexpected', was filmed in Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre in 2021, and aired last night (January 3).

Perhaps the most emotional storyline of the episode comes after 92-year-old John is admitted to resus due to breathing struggles. While tests were being carried out his wife Florence was by his side, who throughout the show told viewers about their relationship, Nottinghamshire Live reports.

The tests unfortunately found that John had sepsis, and that nothing could be done about it. The decision was made that he would be put on end-of-life care, with the awful job of telling Florence falling to Anju.

"It's like living outside your own body, you don't think these things are happening to you," said Florence, struggling to come to terms with the news. Many viewers spoke of this tear-jerking part of the episode.

Twitter user Chloe Malarkey (@what_a_malarkey) said: "Watching 24 hours in A&E like a blubbering mess. Yet I can deal with other stuff and shed no tears… think I’m messed up".

@messybeckie added: "This older couple on 24 Hours in A&E, it's just so heartbreaking. Facing the moment when it's time to say goodbye after a lifetime together".

Annie Thomson (@AnnalisaThomson) tweeted: "I can deal with the broken bones and blood but Flo knowing she is saying her last goodbyes to her husband absolutely breaks my heart!"

@vwyonDubois said: "24 Hours in A&E Heartbreaking truly heartbreaking , they got married in 1951".

Matt Barbet tweeted: "24 Hours in A&E on Channel 4 tonight is a total emotional rollercoaster. The most grotesque ankle injury to Kirsty, then the completely moving story of the end of 93 year old John’s life with his wife Florence by his side. I’m in bits. Brilliant TV."
