Couple left with glass in their faces after brick thrown from Runcorn Bridge

Concerns have been raised after a number of people reported vehicles being targeted by bricks at the Silver Jubilee Bridge.

Drivers approaching the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Runcorn have reported that their vehicles have been the target of yobs throwing bricks. In the Halton HomeWatch Facebook group one driver said she was joining the slip road when someone "threw a brick through my window". The driver posted an accompanying image that showed a cracked windscreen where the object hit.

A number of other drivers also shared similar experiences of the road. One person said: "Me and my partner were driving from Widnes to Runcorn and were hit by a big stone damaging the passenger rear door just as we passed the bus stop."

Another commenter added: "There is a gap in the concrete fence where the footpath leads up to the bus stop. I'm wondering if they are using some sort of catapult or just simply throwing them at cars but are stood back behind the fence so you can't see them from the road."

Cheshire Police confirmed they were aware of incidents of this nature on the slip road. They added bricks had been thrown at public transport as vehicles used the bridge.

A commenter on the Facebook group said she was on a bus when it was hit by a stone. She wrote: "Me and my boyfriend were on the 82A getting to West Bank bus stop going into Runcorn on the day this happened to your car [addressing the post creator]. A brick came flying through the back side window of the bus where we were sat. We had glass in our face. People need to get a grip - it's just nasty."

Chief Inspector Andy Blizard, of Cheshire Police, told the ECHO : said: “This is something we are aware of, and tackling this issue will form part of the operation towards the increase of anti-social behaviour on buses.

"We will be working with bus companies, Halton Borough Council and specialist units within the force to target the offenders, identify them and prosecute them. We’ll also be running a schools package to educate about the risks and consequences of young people throwing items into traffic."
