Couple left fuming after airport baggage chaos leaves clothes shredded to pieces

A couple were left furious after airport baggage chaos left their clothes ripped to shreds. Posting to Twitter, user karen_nowland said her husband's bag was in pieces after flying from Manchester to Colombo in Sri Lanka, Birmingham live reports.

She also shared a picture of her partner's top completely torn apart after their Etihad flight. Karen wrote: "Look what happened to my husband’s bag somewhere between Manchester and Colombo!"

Making light of the situation, she added: "My husband looks like a pirate. Not the tropical holiday look he had in mind. Not sure the backless look suits my husband."

It comes as airlines desperately try to resolve staffing issues, with claims security tests for new workers are being completed in record times after passengers criticised "disaster movie" scenes at airports.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is trying to alleviate flight disruption this summer to avert the mayhem seen over the Easter and Jubilee holidays.

Shortages of staff to handle baggage and carry out security checks such as X-rays are fuelling long queues and delays at UK airports. The Government has ordered the vetting centre to prioritise checks for airports so new recruits can help plug the gaps quicker.

The Department of Transport (DfT) said counter-terrorist checks for aviation workers are now being processed on average in under 10 days - half March's time. But in the short term, the staffing shortages appear to be hitting Heathrow airport.
