A couple from north Wales have explained how they made a round trip to Barcelona in less than one day - managing to see all the iconic sights and still making it home in time to keep their cat company.
Rachel Catherall and Matthew Williams from Mynydd Isa, Flintshire, spend their time vlogging their travels around the UK and other countries for their YouTube channel, Postcard And A Pint. And after a story about two mums paying just £23 for a day trip to Lanzarote went viral, Rachel and Matthew shared their own equally ambitious experience with North Wales Live.
They first had the idea to document their travels after watching people's travel vlogs on YouTube during the pandemic, and in 2022 made their trip to Barcelona. They had to make sure they got home in time to see their cat Boots, though.
Boots was the couple's only cat after their other cat Muppet died aged 16 in 2021. Matthew, known as Wills, explained that Muppet and Boots had "grown up together," and didn't want to leave Boots on his own for too long.
On the detail of the trip itself, Wills said the couple set off at around 2.30am, and made it home 23 hours later. He said: "We both loved travel and had exhausted all the travel programmes on TV when we discovered the travel vlogs on Youtube. During Covid we were restricted to Wales, but after we were able to travel abroad after. We wanted to show people what could be done in a short space of time and the great places you can get to."
The couple managed to see Las Ramblas and Antoni Gaudí's unfinished Sagrada Familia, and even made it to the beach during their trip. They kept the cost of the trip low as large parts of it were funded by vouchers for trips cancelled during Covid. On their vlogging adventures they've gone to Whitby, Amsterdam, Covent Garden and Jodrell Bank, just to name a few destinations.
Their website says: "Follow the adventures of Rach and Wills as we travel round the UK and beyond, making fun videos with just enough interesting nuggets of information to entertain you or to enhance your experiences and knowledge of each location. As always, we'll be finishing the day off with a well deserved pint. This channel was an idea that came out of the lockdown craziness, mixed with a hint of mid life crisis and desire to spend more time with each other enjoying life. We hope you will join us and enjoy our travels as much as we do."
Boots sadly crossed the 'Rainbow Bridge' in May 2022, not long after Rach and Will's Barcelona trip. In the couple's latest travel video, they took themselves on an 'Adventure Challenge' in Rhyl - but not long ago, they spent time in Salzburg and Munich before Christmas.
