County Durham mum admits making false burglary report to police saying vehicle had been stolen

A County Durham mum has admitted making a false burglary report to the police saying her vehicle had been stolen.

Emma Mary Thompson committed the offence on November 3, 2020 at Sacriston in County Durham.

The 37-year-old, of Little Burn Way, Pelton Fell, Chester-le-Street, appeared at Durham Crown Court on Wednesday facing one charge of intending to pervert the course of public justice.

She pleaded guilty to the single count during the hearing.

The charge states: "With intent to pervert the course of public justice, did an act, namely made a false report to police of a burglary whereby her vehicle was stolen."

Defence barrister, Tony Davis said Thompson is in "full time employment with two children" and that more information on her personal circumstances would need to be gathered in a pre-sentence report.

Judge Ray Singh agreed, and said the offence was "extremely serious" before warning Thompson it is "highly likely and probable" she will receive a prison sentence.

The judge adjourned the sentencing until Wednesday, March 30, and granted her bail until her next appearance.

Full details of the offence will be given at the sentencing.
