County Durham for families

Blessed with breathtaking countryside, modern and historic attractions and charming towns with fantastic transport systems and quality schools, County Durham is brilliant for families. Whether you’re heading there for a holiday or buying one of the new build homes in Darlington to start your family adventure, use this guide to find the delights on your doorstep and make the most of every second in this region.

1. Historical adventures

Engaging heritage sites are abundant in County Durham which is incredible considering its size. Most impressive is Durham Cathedral which dates back to 1133 and contains shrines to venerable Anglo-Saxon saints. Its looming towers and grisly history will enthral children, and they can wander through spaces used in the world-famous Harry Potter films. On the outskirts of Darlington, you’ll find 14th-century Raby Castle which is impressive to this day.

Another way to explore local history is with a visit to Beamish, one of the most celebrated museums in the UK. Life in the North East throughout the ages is brought to life in interactive displays led by actors.

2. Outdoor escapes

Do you enjoy venturing into the great outdoors with the family? In County Durham, you’re in luck! From forests with cycling trails to coastal delights like beaches and clifftop paths, there’s a wealth of beautiful places to explore together.

Seaham and Hartlepool are thriving seaside towns where you can combine playtime in the sand with arcade games and a delicious fish-and-chip dinner, or you can head to a quieter spot on Durham’s Heritage Coastline for rock-pooling and fossil-hunting. For hiking and biking, visit Hamsterley Forest with its adventure playgrounds or explore the North Pennines which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

3. Family attractions

Rainy days aren’t a problem for families in County Durham! Child-centric attractions promising hours of entertainment for kids of all ages are within easy reach whether you’re in the countryside or one of the larger towns.

Browse a collection of historic trains at Locomotion. Located in Shildon, the world’s first railway town, this museum explores the highlights of the nation’s locomotive past. Children enamoured with Thomas the Tank Engine, and vehicles in general, will never want to leave!

Set in the striking Barnard Castle, The Bowes Museum is another popular option. If the incredible artworks on display don’t impress your little ones, the extensive gardens and parkland of this spectacular English Heritage Site will!

For a decidedly modern experience, go to Adventure Valley theme park near Durham city centre. Boasting over 50 activities including thrilling rides and weekly shows, this is failsafe family fun. Enjoy thrilling water slides, the adventure playground and meeting friendly farm animals.
