County Durham family business blames 'huge increase' in costs for closure after 64 years

A family business in the County Durham village of Lanchester has shut up shop after 64 years with the owners saying it was 'the hardest decision we have ever had to make".

Crinnions, on Front Street, started as a family butchers in 1959 and had more recently become a popular deli, bar and restaurant, but announced it was closing its doors due to the cost of living crisis.

A notice on the door of the shop and on Crinnons Facebook page read: "Due to huge increase in utilities, supplier costs, rise in wages and the current cost of living we have been forced to close our business. This is the hardest decision we have ever had to make and it ends a lifetime of hard work and commitment from us both. We will be working through the diary to contact all bookings over the next few days. "We wish to thank everyone who has supported us over the years and we wish you well in the future. Love Paul Crinnion and Fiona Wilson."

The post on Facebook attracted more than 600 comments, with locals, charities and musicians who had played in the venue all lamenting its closure, with many saying the village would not be the same without Crinnions.

One said: "This is such sad news to read. Crinnions - in its varied forms - has been an integral part of the village for many many years. This really must have been a very hard decision. All the very best to you, the team and all involved over the years. Crinnions will be missed. Thank you for providing many good times over the years!" while another added: "So sad to read this, we've had some great times at Crinnions over the years, it'll be a huge miss. Such a shame that businesses are being hit so hard, this must've been a really difficult decision. Wishing you all well for the future x"

A comment by Willow Burn Hospice, in nearby Maiden Law, said: "We are so incredibly sad to hear that. You are a special part of the village and have been huge supporters of Willow Burn - thank you for everything" and local band The Vinyl Chimes said: "Terrible news. One of our favourite places to play. Hospitality was first class and we always had a blast. Really gutted to hear this. Best of luck to the management and staff for the future."

The establishment was also popular with Trip Adviser reviewers, who gave it an overall 4.5/5 in 659 reviews. Reviewers praised its 'Great food and welcoming atmosphere" and described it as a "Lovely restaurant and bar with excellent staff and high quality food"
