County Durham dad faces jail after he admitted causing the deaths of three people in crash

A North East dad is facing a jail sentence after he admitted causing the deaths of three people by dangerous driving.

Carl Simpson appeared at Canterbury Crown Court on Wednesday, following the deaths of three people in a crash on April 18, 2021, on Romney Road, in Kent. Simpson was driving his BMW at the time and was also seriously hurt in the collision.

The defendant, from Glebe Close, in Fishburn, County Durham, pleaded guilty to the offences and was told he would be remanded in custody until the next hearing. Judge Simon James, the recorder of Canterbury, asked for a pre-sentence report and said custody was "inevitable", reports TeessideLive.

He said: "An immediate sentence of imprisonment is inevitable. In those circumstances I ought to remand the defendant in custody until sentence."

Simpson's barrister, Tom Doble, argued the court should extend bail. He said: "Mr Simpson has suffered from depressive disorder since the incident and earlier this year he was referred to the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust Mind rapid response team by the local crisis team as he was experiencing suicidal thoughts."

Mr Doble also said the defendant suffered serious injuries in the crash and asked the court to allow him opportunity to put his affairs in order and say goodbye to his wife and three children before he is sent to prison. Judge James denied the request and remanded the 36-year-old in custody until his sentencing hearing at the same court on June 29. No further details of the case were outlined.
