Councillor pledges 'full prosecution' after masses of rubbish dumped on street

A COUNCILLOR has said he is “bloody raging” after boxes full of children’s toys were dumped at a fly-tipping hot spot in Glasgow’s Southside.

Councillor Richard Bell, deputy leader of Glasgow City Council, has hit out after several boxes of toys and other items were left strewn across Iona Street in Ibrox.

The latest fly-tipping incident comes after "a lot of money" was spent in recent weeks removing masses of rubbish dumped in the area.

Councillor Bell told our sister paper The Glasgow Time that he waited “half the morning” for the boxes to be collected by cleansing staff and he now wants "the full book thrown at the culprits".

He said: “I went straight down because I wanted to see if there was any evidence of who had dumped that and fortunately they’d left an address label on one of the boxes.

“I’ll be ensuring that there is a full prosecution of the business concerned because it is completely unacceptable that they bring their rubbish to Govan and just dump it with no thought or consideration for the residents that live around that bit of ground.

“They wouldn’t dump it in their own back garden but they think they can just come and dump it in ours?

“Well, that’s not on and I’m not having that. I want the full book thrown at them, I am so angry about this.

“I’m absolutely furious because we just spent all that money to remove the rubbish dumped there a week ago.

“It’s [fly-tipping] got significantly worse in the last wee while but commercial fly-tipping across the city seems to be getting worse at the moment.

“There are hotspot areas and because this ground is lying derelict people think they can just come and throw their rubbish at it.”

In January, a local hit out over the “dreadful” fly-tipping site which is located near her home.

Lorraine Hargan explained that she has become accustomed to people dumping their rubbish in Ibrox over the 50 years that she has lived in the area, but that lately it has become the worst it has ever been.

The 74-year-old’s concerns were echoed by Councillor Bell who stated that the issue is of “massive concern” to the local authority.

He added: “It’s a massive concern because as a city government, we are trying our absolute best with the very limited amount of money we’ve got to keep the cleansing service going as best we can.

“You spend a lot of money getting that area cleaned up and then less than a week later some other so and so goes and dumps all that.

“That’s not something that happens accidentally. Somebody has gone out of their way. They’ve driven from where their business is located to Govan and chosen to dump it there because they’ve got no respect for the people that live there and it’s just not happening.

“I was also concerned as it’s not that far from Ibrox Primary School. The reason I had to have it cleared quickly was I was concerned that the kids would come out and see boxes full of toys, maybe burst the boxes, and then the toys could end up being scattered all over the place.

“I waited by the side of the boxes until the cleansing team were able to come and take them away.

"A business in Glasgow will be hearing from us very shortly with a fine for what they’ve done.”

Glasgow City Council has been contacted for comment.
