Sir Rod Stewart's pothole repair stunt slammed by council over 'safety risks'

Essex County Council is 'discouraging' anybody thinking of conducting DIY roadworks after a video of Sir Rod Stewart fixing potholes near to his home went viral.

Sir Rod felt like he had no choice but to take matters into his own hands at the weekend, telling fans the road at his Essex property was so bad an ambulance had burst a tyre and his Ferrari was unable to drive through.

The Hoops-daft singer donned his Celtic FC tracksuit bottoms and high vis vest and got to work with a team of pals.

Residents were also reportedly unable to drive through the road as a result of the damage, prompting Rod and his friends to leap into action.

The 77-year-old singer also said that "nobody else could be bothered to do it [repair the road]" so he had decided to do it himself.

The video, shared to his social media accounts, has since gone viral.

In the video, Sir Rod showed his followers how he was repairing the road after a number of vehicles, including an ambulance, struggled to get through due to the potholes.

He also stressed that the M11 had seen a number of roadworks that have taken place, but Sheering Lower Road hasn't, despite the damage.

Sir Rod was dubbed a 'legend' by many residents who also struggled to get through the road due to the potholes. But Essex County Council has since said they would 'discourage' anyone thinking of repairing roads themselves.

The council, which looks after the maintenance and repair work for Essex roads, said that people could put themselves at 'risk' if they fix roads themselves.

They stated that safety measures should be adhered to, as well as 'proper' traffic management. However, they added that they 'appreciated' Sir Rod's 'commitment and community spirit'.

An Essex Highways spokesperson said: “While we would like to prioritise repairs to every road, the scale of our network – over 5,000 miles – means this is impossible and we have to focus on repairing defects likely to be most detrimental to the safety of our
road users.

“While we appreciate Sir Rod’s commitment and community spirit, we discourage anyone from carrying out work on the roads themselves.

"Without proper traffic management and other specific safety measures, residents are putting themselves and others at risk.”

Over the weekend, Sir Rod shared the video of him conducting repair work to the road on his TikTok and Instagram pages: "This is the state of the road near where I live in Harlow and it's been like this for ages," he said in the video.

"People are bashing their cars up.

"The other day, there was an ambulance with a burst tyre. My Ferrari can't go through here at all.

"So me and the boys thought we would come and do it ourselves.

"We are filling the holes while millions and millions of pounds have been spent on the M11."

Sir Rod shared another video to his 1.1million Instagram followers, where he was singing while shovelling gravel before he said: "I'm repairing the street where I live because nobody could be bothered to do it - me and my mates."
