Council provide Ayr Cemetery update as 'leaking tombs' probe continues

Council chiefs have provided an update after ‘leaking tomb’ fears were revealed at Ayr Cemetery.

Cemetery works are fully underway at the graveyard with mourners cut off from visiting loved ones' graves for several weeks.

Ayrshire Live told how a probe into ‘water ingress’ at the Holmston Road cemetery will take place after flooding concerns were raised by a member of the public.

Sources last week told Ayrshire Live that ‘above-ground’ mausoleums were at the centre of the probe.

But it has since emerged that the dozens of graves cut off are in the eastern extension side of the cemetery and are underground.

A vast section of the extension is now 'fenced off' as specialist teams carry out delicate work to investigate graves and probe flooding fears.

After several attempts for clarity from South Ayrshire Council, an official spokesperson confirmed the location of the graves in question and where water ingress is suspected.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “At no point did we suggest this work involved the mausolea which is in the main cemetery.

“As previously noted, the investigation is into ground conditions with regards to a concern from a member of the public that there may be water ingress into some of the chambers in Ayr Cemetery extension.

“All chambers are underground within the cemetery extension, which is on the eastern side of the cemetery.”
