Council investment for roads and pavements through multi-million project

Renfrewshire's ailing pavements and roads are set for works.

It comes as part of an investment from Renfrewshire Council's Roads Capital Programme, which will fund resurfacing of roads and footways in the area.

A total of 89 roads and 93 pavements will receive attention under the operation.

SNP councillors on the authority say the funding is part of a £40 million package of investment in the area's roads put in place a few years ago by the council's Nats administration, providing "the biggest ever sustained investment in Renfrewshire's roads network".

A further programme dealing with large area patching - for areas between 500 and 700 square meters - is currently under scrutiny and waiting to be finalised.

Pothole repairs will be carried out separately, rather than as part of the planned repair programmes.

Alongside investment in roads and footways, more than £700,000 will be ploughed in to drainage improvements in known flooding sites across Renfrewshire, with £100,000 ring-fenced to deliver improvements to key roundabouts.

Councillor Mags MacLaren, who represents the SNP in the Paisley Northwest ward, said: "Although there is always more to do, I welcome the focus on some of the roads in Paisley Northwest in this years Roads Capital Programme.

"At this time of year we often see the impact of winter and bad weather on our roads, so it is good to see the Roads Investment programme for the coming year focusing on key roads in Paisley Northwest including Broomlands Street, Maxwelton Street and Ferguslie (main road)."

She added: "There is also some work planned for the footways (pavements) in Lansbury Gardens and parts of Alexandria Drive but I will keep up the pressure for other pavements and roads within the ward which need action.

"This plan does not include reactive pothole maintenance and I would encourage anyone who notices a pothole to report it straight away by calling the council on 0300 300 0300 or by completing the online form on the council’s website."

Councillors face uncertainty as residents go to the polls for May's local government election.
