Council House Swap: The woman who turned a downstairs loo into a pantry without removing the toilet

No matter how big or small your property, most of us are looking for extra space and one woman has come up with an interesting solution to creating more storage. Alison, who appears in Channel 5 show Council House Swap, has changed her downstairs toilet into a pantry - without removing the toilet.

Alison, who lives near London, was showing the very fussy Michael and Lucy, from Leicestershire around her home, as they were looking to swap their three-bedroom council property for a smaller house. And when it came to revealing her pantry, she explained that instead of removing the toilet, shelves had been built around the loo and food was even stacked around the bottom of the toilet.

The decision to convert the toilet into the pantry was fuelled by the need for more storage but Lucy did not seem particularly impressed when Alison showed her the toilet. She said: "Oh... ok," very unenthusiastically and asked why the toilet had not been removed.

Alison said: "No, you don't need to!" while proudly showing off her toilet/pantry. This was not the only space-saving trick Alison had used around the house as she halved one of the bedrooms, to turn them into two small box rooms, to make space for both her granddaughter and daughter. Michael described one of these small rooms to be "like a prison cell".

In the end, Michael and Lucy decided not to invite Alison back to Leicestershire to view their home after they decided the bedrooms were too small and they did not like the pantry/toilet situation. After viewing three potential houses, Michael and Lucy could not find any house that they liked or would want to swap with during the programme.

In Wales Carmarthenshire council is planning another 2,200 affordable homes across the county in areas including Llanelli and Ammanford. Council House Swap airs on Channel 5 on Wednesday, March, 23 at 9pm.
