Council cleansing workers get overtime to clean up areas around TRNSMT festival

Cleansing workers have been tasked with the role of cleaning up the outskirts of Glasgow Green this weekend as revellers make their way to and from TRNSMT.

More than 150,000 people are expected to enjoy Scotland’s biggest festival with acts such as Pulp, The 1975, Kasabian, Sam Fender and George Ezra taking to the main stage.

But in the run up to the event, the GMB has raised concerns with the city council about the clean up process after complaints were made about the amount of litter left both inside and outside the park last year and the lack of bins made available to the public.

While DF Concerts will still be responsible for inside Glasgow Green itself, GMB convenor Chris Mitchell says that cleansing workers have been offered overtime this Saturday and Sunday to help keep the outside of the park clean and give staff the chance to make more cash.

Glasgow City Council says it is pleased to work with the trade unions to deploy an effective cleansing operation this weekend.

Chris Mitchell said: “It will be our responsibility to clean up the outskirts of the park.

“Over the last 12 months we have been raising concerns about street cleansing in general. There are going to be tens of thousands of people descending on Glasgow Green this weekend.

“We have taken a proposal to the council and they have allocated overtime to our workers which is good because this will also help low paid workers get a wee bit of extra money in their pockets and of course it is going to help clean up the city.

“This will also make a difference in the clean up process around the park. The council has done the right thing this year.”

The local authority says it wants to make sure the city remains in good order during events such as TRNSMT.

A council spokesman said: “Large events such as TRNSMT attract increased footfall and unfortunately that does lead to additional littering in public spaces.

“We want to ensure the city remains in good order during major events and being able to deploy extra staff will help with that.

“We are pleased to work with trade union colleagues on delivering an effective street cleansing operation in conjunction with forthcoming events at Glasgow Green.”

DF Concerts has been approached for comment.
