The Washington Commanders will head into free agency next month with an NFL-leading $73.6 million in salary cap space, according to Over the Cap. Washington could create even more space by releasing veterans like offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr. and Logan Thomas.
The NFL sets the salary cap every year ahead of the new league year, which begins on March 13. Early projections have the 2024 salary cap at around $242 or $243 million.
What if the NFL has an even higher number for 2024?
Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, one of his sources indicated that the 2024 salary cap would be “more” than $242-243 million. How much more? Florio says another source said the cap could be as much as $250 million in 2024.
Another source says it will be closer to $250 million than $243 million. https://t.co/i5O8XNEvhy

If the number comes in at $250 million, the Commanders, without any additional moves, would have approximately $80 million in cap space with the ability to create more. A jump of $7 million is significant — if actual.
We should find out next week if Florio’s source is accurate as the NFL convenes in Indianapolis for the 2024 scouting combine.
