Could the Academy really take Will Smith's Oscar back after he hit Chris Rock on stage?

Will Smith slaps Chris Rock during Oscars

Will Smith can expect sanctions from Oscars organisers after he hit comedian Chris Rock on stage.

But it is not clear how far the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will go to discipline him.

Smith won the Best Actor award for his role as Richard Williams in King Richard shortly after he hit Rock in the face for making a joke about his wife's shaved head.

The Academy's standards of conduct policy states it is "categorically opposed to any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination".

Violations may result in suspension or expulsion from the group, revocation of Oscars, or loss of eligibility for future awards, according to the policy.

Have police or the Academy taken any action?

The Academy said it "condemned the actions of Mr Smith at last night's show."

"We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed it was aware of the incident but said Chris Rock declined to file a police report.

"If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report," the LAPD said in a statement.

Has anyone had an Oscar taken from them before?

It's rare for the Academy to revoke memberships or rescind awards.

Producer Harvey Weinstein was expelled in 2017 after more than three dozen women accused him of sexual assault.

Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski were kicked out in 2018.

Cosby was convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in 2004, though a judge later overturned the conviction.

Polanski admitted to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Could the Academy really take Will Smith's Oscar?

While it's not entirely off the cards, it's more likely Smith will see his Academy membership suspended.

The Academy's board of governors are likely to discuss the matter at their next meeting where this year's Oscars ceremony will be reviewed in full.
