A little café you might not even know exists serves up a delicious breakfast in a tranquil, unassuming setting.
The Little Owl, based on Wellington Road, is a stone's throw away from the hustle and bustle of Picton Road, yet it's a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it venue nestled among residential buildings. Though it's a somewhat unexpected spot for a café, it's easy to see why it's always packed to the rafters.
Inside, the small venue is painted in bright and calming white, with stylish exposed bulbs, fairy lights, pretty green plants, and wooden crates housing coffee and snacks from local independent traders. There's a feature wall behind the counter painted in stylish dark blue, and it offers an extensive menu of breakfasts, lunches, snacks, sweet treats and more.

There's a real community vibe to the café, with friendly staff who instinctively know if you fancy a chat or want to be left alone. Though it's small, it never feels cramped or too hectic.
After perusing the menu, I opted for the vegetarian breakfast, which came with two slices of toast, two eggs, two sausages, vine tomatoes, mushrooms, beans and halloumi. I ordered a Coke Zero to wash it down with, and my bill came to a respectable £8.70.
I'm not the biggest fan of a traditional Full English breakfast (I know, I know) but thoroughly enjoyed this dish, particularly thanks to the generous serving of halloumi. Vegetarian breakfasts don't always have a tasty substitute in place of the meat, and I appreciated The Little Owl's commitment to offer something hearty, filling and a little different to the usual veggie Full English options.
The eggs were delightfully runny, the toast was dripping in salted butter, and the halloumi was cooked to perfection. The beans came in a little dish - much to my delight, as I hate it when they run onto other items and over-saturate the flavours. I'm firmly with Sally Albright in the 1989 classic 'When Harry Met Sally'; some items just belong on the side.
The sausages were a little dry and bland, but that's a minor complaint for such a tasty and filling breakfast. After I'd finished eating, I found it difficult to get up and go, as the café creates such a tranquil, inviting and cosy setting.
I'd definitely recommend visiting The Little Owl. There's a decent menu with reasonably priced, tasty dishes, in a lovely, quiet and relatively unexpected haven.
The Little Owl Café is based at 3M Wellington Road, Liverpool, L15 4JN. It's open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am until 2.30pm.
