Costa hikes price of coffee by up to 20p as customers slam 'ridiculous' rise

Costa Coffee has increased the price of self-service hot drinks with customers facing another price hike amid a cost of living crisis.

The price hikes - which came into effect three months ago at 12,000 Costa Express machines around the UK - are due to "inflationary pressures", the company said.

On average, the price of a regular and large drink respectively increased from £2.50 to £2.70 (20p) and £2.70 to £2.85 (15p).

A regular hot chocolate, which previously cost £2.50, will now cost £2.70, while customers will have to pay £2.95 for a large drink - up from £2.80.

The cost of a regular cappuccino or a latte has gone up from £2.50 to £2.70, while a large size of the drinks will cost £2.95.

It comes after Costa removed the popular filter coffee option from its drink menu.

Many people enjoyed the small wallet-friendly 99p filter option for a boost to their day.

However, the new September menu removed the option meaning the next cheapest option is a £2.55 small Americano or £2.70 for a small flat black which uses the same Mocha Italia Signature Blend beans.

Just three months ago, we reported that customers were left disappointed after the major chain hiked its prices.

Fans of the coffee giant complained on Twitter that their flat white had increased overnight from £2.95 to £3.30.

Others claimed their medium skinny lattes had gone up from £3.10 to £3.35 and small cappuccinos from £3.15 to £3.50.

Complaining to Costa on Twitter, one customer said: “Another sneaky price rise of 30p on my large latte. Would be good if you had notified us on social media.”

Another tweeted: “Yesterday I was charged £2.40 for my normal drink, large skinny cappuccino. Today I was charged £2.70, an increase of 30p overnight!! Any reasons for this ridiculous price increase??!”

A Costa Coffee spokesperson said: "Like all retailers, Costa Coffee is facing unprecedented inflationary pressures resulting in increased costs.

"We know this is a challenging time for our customers as well, which is why we are absorbing costs wherever we can. Despite this we’ve had to make the difficult decision to increase the prices of our drinks at our self-serve Costa Express machines on 1 June 2022.

"We regularly review prices with our partners to ensure they remain competitive in the relevant retail environment, offering quality and value. Tesco customers for example who have a Clubcard can receive a regular hot drink from a Costa Express machine as part of the Tesco £3 meal deal.

"And all customers can continue to earn a Bean for each drink purchased at a Costa Express machine via the free Costa Club rewards scheme app. Once eight beans have been collected, a free drink can be redeemed in Costa Coffee stores."

The cost of living crisis has had an impact on every aspect of life, as food prices go up, bills hit record highs and tenants face paying more for their homes.

The UK's average rent price has gone up by £115 per month in the last year, reaching £1,051, according to Zoopla.

The new figure makes up 34.4% of the average income of a single earner and is forcing tenants to downsize in order to tackle rising costs.

Over the last 12 months, rents rose by 12.3% compared to less than 2% in the year to July 2021.
