Cost of living payments 2023, who is eligible and how much are they worth

Millions across the country will again receive some help with the rising cost of living next year.

However, the 2023 payment will now be given on a means-tested basis as opposed to the blanket £400 boost given to each household this year. It means that you will need to meet certain eligibility criteria in order to receive the next cost of living payment, which has been split into three amounts - £150, £300, and £900.

The payments will be in addition to the £650 cost of living payment given to the most vulnerable groups already this year. However, there have been no details released as to when the payments will be made in 2023, reports the Mirror. Announcing the new payment, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said: “For the most vulnerable we will introduce additional cost of living payments next year, of £900 to households on means-tested benefits; £300 to pensioner households; and £150 for individuals on disability benefit.“

Here is who is eligible and what payment amount they will get.

Who will receive the £900 payment?

To be eligible to receive the £900 cost of living payment, people will have to already be claiming one of the following benefits:

  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance

  • Income Support

  • Universal Credit

  • Working Tax Credit

  • Child Tax Credit

This payment is expected to be paid in installments.

This year, restrictions were put in place for the £650 payment, which means you had to be claiming one of the benefits mentioned above between certain dates. The same rules are expected to apply for the 2023 £900 payment.

Who will get the £300 pension payment?

The £300 will be paid to pensioner households throughout the country, but any eligibility dates are yet to be detailed.

The payment will be made in addition to the Winter Fuel Payment - of £100 to £300 - already given to pensioners.

Who will get the £150 disability payment?

To receive the £150 payment, you will need to be already claiming one of the following disability benefits:

  • Attendance Allowance

  • Constant Attendance Allowance

  • Disability Living Allowance for adults

  • Disability Living Allowance for children

  • Personal Independence Payment

  • Adult Disability Payment (in Scotland)

  • Child Disability Payment (in Scotland)

  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

  • War Pension Mobility Supplement

Again, the DWP has not yet released details on the dates you need to have been claiming one of the above benefits to receive the £150.

Some people will be eligible for more than one of the payments explained above with the sum payable to them a collective figure of all payments applicable.
