Cost of living: How to save on heating bills ahead of fuel allowance deadline

Energy experts have revealed some top tips before the fuel allowance is halted.

The fuel allowance, which was first granted in early 2022, helped several cohorts save on their bills amid the ongoing energy crisis. However, the €33 payment is expected to cease on April 7, will come as a blow to those reliant on the sum.

Electric Ireland has issued some advice to Irish households on tackling their heating bills. The gas provider says that lowering temperatures by 1 degree can ultimately save families up to 8 per cent on their overall charges.

However, the utility company has also urged people not to lower their temperatures to levels that could cause significant discomfort. Temperatures are set to plummet in the coming days as Met Eireann predicts a further cold snap.

Other tips outside for preserving heating costs include tackling draughts in the home. Gaps in the floor can be easily plugged with silicon sealant, for instance.

Electric Ireland also recommends that people turn off their heating at least 30 minutes before they leave the house or go to bed, as rooms will retain warmth in the aftermath. Investing in a reflector for home radiators may also be helpful, as it will pump heat back into a room rather than out through the home.

Reflectors can be easily purchased in most hardware stores. Electric Ireland estimates that they contribute to a 35 per cent decrease in heating loss overall.

Certain cohorts have been able to access the fuel allowance since 2022, including those aged over 70 and people on long term social welfare payments. The payment is made in a weekly instalment of €33 and was being received by 370,000 households by the end of last year.
