Cost of living crisis NI: Belfast Live readers share biggest prices rises in their supermarket shop

People across Northern Ireland have been feeling the pressure due to recent hikes in energy costs, fuel prices and their household bills.

And with gas and electricity bills in Northern Ireland set to rise further from April, households already struggling will be the hardest hit.

As this cost of living crisis continues to leave families struggling or forced to choose between filling the car or heating their homes, many have noticed their weekly shopping bills also beginning to rise.

We asked Belfast Live readers what is the biggest hike they have noticed in the supermarket lately to see the impact price rises are having here in NI.

Here is what they had to say:

Lorainne commented: "No one item but Tesco not increased by pennies it's 30p to 60p I noticed. Weekly cost now up by £25 and that's not including gas and electric."

Jolene mirrored her sentiment by adding that she noticed their prices seem "to be up 10/20p every few days".

Dianne said: "Tesco's mac n cheese went from £1.50 to £2.75!!!

"Poundland and Lidl are best, plus meal planning. No more processed rubbish, best to buy a meat parcel from local butchers and make a big pot of stew or casserole, it'll last 2-3 days. Veg soup costs very little, easy to make and also last days and can be frozen."

Many readers said they have noticed the biggest hikes in the larger chain supermarkets and gave their suggestions for getting more value from your groceries by "shopping around".

Alma commented: "Tesco are selling Allison brown rolls for £1.25 for pkt of 6. You can buy them in Iceland for 65p exact same rolls.

"How do they justify that, and Tesco a bigger establishment than Iceland. I shop Iceland, Lidl, Home Bargans and B&M and get exact same products far cheaper. Seedless Raspberry jam was £1 a few mths bk in Iceland, B&M and Poundland at Mall and on the same day Spar in Dunmurry was charging £2.35 for 1 jar. Iceland is now £1.25 so dread to think what price the Spars are now."

Necessities such as baby items and pet food have not been missed out in these price increases according to Belfast Live readers.

Tonya said: "Cat food pouches went from £3.99 to £4.59 but everything has went up paying £30 to £40 more for a shop I’m not working because of my health and my benefits only went up last April by £0.20."

Tanya added: "Used to be able to get a tray of 24 dog food in Tesco for £5.50 or two for £9. Now £7 a tray and the full £14 for two!"

Anne Marie also commented: "Nappies, Asda jumbo pack of pampers was £8 now £12. My minds blown. That’s in 20 months of a difference."

Patrick said: "When we go to Tesco usually spend just under £200. Now we get 3/4 of way round and already spent that. So it’s hard to watch. Changing things from brands to Tesco own brands help a lot. Iceland is better value for frozen."
