Corrie Summer actress' six-year age gap with character and why original star left

Summer Spellman mysteriously vanished from our screens last year - then returned with a completely different face.

Original actress Matilda Freeman left the role and was replaced by newcomer Harriet Bibby.

Summer, who arrived on the cobbles on 2017, was sent off to stay with her grandmother but returned to confront former guardian Todd Grimshaw, who ran away and left her for years.

It's been quite a struggle for Summer, who has struggled with the death of her dad Drew, Todd's sudden exit and Billy's dangerous painkiller addiction.

Luckily, new actress Harriet Bibby leads a completely different life to her character - and she is also considerably older.

Harriet was in tears when she got the call from her agent to say she had won the part as he family had watched the soap for years, and she got the blessing of departing star Matilda.

"Matilda has wished me good luck, which was lovely! I’m looking forward to bringing Summer’s sass and sparkle to the screen," said Harriet while discussing the role.

She added: "I was so excited and nervous for my first day - I just wanted to make a good impression. Everyone was so welcoming and I felt comfortable straight away.

"Filming is different at the minute, obviously. But ITV have put all of the necessary precautions in place to make everyone feel safe.

"I’m having a blast meeting everyone and making friends with the fabulous cast and crew. We are all one big family."

Harriet, who was born in Wigan, was cast after Matilda made the decision to quit the role to pursue other opportunities.

Speaking about her departure, Matilda said: "I’d like to say thank you to my second family, the cast, crew and viewers who have supported me during my time on the cobbles.

"After three and a half lovely years I felt it was time for a change and I’m excited to be starting that next chapter with a new role."

Harriet has previously appeared in Doctors and Sky One's Brassic - and her new one comes with a major challenge.

The actress is 22-years-old, but is playing 16-year-old Summer, which she admits "doesn't feel that bizarre.

When asked if it feels strange playing a teenager, she said: "I still feel like a kid and I do have a baby face, and she's had a difficult past which has made her more mature.

"I've always had to have ID on me and I'll have to carry it with me even more now."

Harriet has loved filming alongside cast favourites such as Daniel Brocklebank (Billy), Peter Ash (Paul) and Gareth Pierce (Todd).

“Being on the cobbles that I’ve watched for so many years on television is like walking into a story book," she said.

"Meeting some of the Corrie legends has been very surreal and I’m loving every minute of it."

On taking over the role of Summer, she added: "It was a strange feeling to come in as an already existing character but because I watched the show it felt like I knew their relationship," she said.

Harriet is in the thick of a multitude of dramatic storyline right now, including Summer's struggle to come to terms with her diabetes diagnosis.

Corrie fans have seen Summer being rushed to hospital after collapsing and told she has type one diabetes.

Explaining how her character is feeling, Harriet said: "A lot of people have heard of diabetes but I actually I don’t think a lot of people know what it actually is and what actually happens to your body, because I know I didn’t when we started discussing this storyline.

"I go, ‘alright she gets diabetes but what actually is it?' So when she’s diagnosed you have this huge hit of, ‘oh right I’ve got this lifelong condition that I’m gonna have to deal with, but I don’t even know what that is or what I have to do to control it’, so yeah I think she’s a bit scared.

"I think finding out you have a lifelong condition that you’re gonna have to deal with, you don’t wrap your head around it for a little while," she continued.

"We’ve spoken to Diabetes UK while we’ve been in the run up to this storyline and I think that’s what a lot of people struggle with when they’re diagnosed, is... 'actually I’m going to have to live with this for a long time', and I don’t think Summer does really realise that.

"She relies on Billy to help her with her medication and I don’t think, as a teenager, she likes being told what to do."

Harriet has teased that we will see a bit of "teenage rebellion" with Summer as she comes to term with her new life changes.

She believes her hard-working character, who has started losing weight and feeling faint, has got tunnel vision with her studies and wanting to do well at school so not realised she is not well.

If that wasn't hard enough, Summer is also dealing with the lies being spread by Todd, who has slithered back into the family home by getting rid of Paul.

For now, Todd and Billy seem happy, but happiness never lasts long in soapland, particularly when it's come about through pure lies.

Opening up on how Summer feels about Todd and Billy versus Paul and Billy, she said: "She's not had an easy life and Todd's not been great to Summer.

"They have this great relationship, but it's not built on that much level ground and if Summer knew how much Todd schemed, it goes back to Summer's moral code," she revealed.

"She would be really disappointed I think, because she does love him and she loves the idea of their little family unit being back together.

"But I don't think she'd be able to trust him and I think Paul is someone that Summer has always been able to rely on and they did build up a really lovely relationship. We'll have to wait and see."

Harriet added that she does not know where the storyline is headed, and surprisingly revealed she likes Billy and Todd as a couple, despite many Corrie fans desperate to see Billy and Paul back together.

Just to add to Summer's current woes, she is also feeling guilty over Seb Franklin's murder and being threatened to keep quiet by evil Corey Brent.

"I think that each character kind of reacted differently to the events of what happened that night, whether it was grief or guilt or regret," Harriet explained.

"I think Summer definitely... none of them have been coping well... and I think Summer falls into that category as well.

"She has quite a strong moral code that she doesn’t like to stray from and I think that she feels guilty about leaving before she could help, so I think she feels as though she was partly to blame for what happened because she didn’t stay and stop something that she could see turning a bit sour.

"She should be proud of the fact that she noticed something was happening that she didn’t want to be involved in, so left, but I think actually the way she thinks about it is, ‘if I had stayed I could have maybe prevented something from happening, maybe something would have happened different’, so I think she feels guilty about not staying."

Commenting on how Corrie fans have reacted to the storyline, Harriet said: "I think a lot of people feel quite sorry for Summer.

"Obviously the reaction has been insane from the storyline and I think it’s made quite a lot of people think and have those difficult conversations.

"But I think watching Summer battle with this guilt, I think people feel quite sorry for her."

Coronation Street airs tonight on ITV at 9pm
