We went to the heart, or the stomach, of Coronation Street in Monday night's episode as the hour-long episode began with a tale of two breakfasts. PC Craig Tinker took time out from being a bent copper to make fiancee Faye Windass breakfast 'à la Craigy' - tomato, bacon, scrambled egg 'with a secret ingredient.'
It seems the secret ingredient was guilt as Faye - worried sick that her policeman partner would spill on her part in a hit and run accident involving a pensioner who later died - couldn't face sitting down to eat with Craig after he had implied that he was blackmailing her into staying with him over starting a new life with her ex Jackson Hodge and daughter Miley.
Meanwhile, over at Billy Mayhew and Paul Foreman's flat, it was a happier breakfast scene as the loved-up couple hungrily tucked into their breakfast of eggs while exchanging innuendo. But beneath the picture of domestic bliss, Paul is still hiding the devastating secret from his loved-ones that he's living with motor neurone disease.

But from breakfast onwards, life unravelled for both Faye and Paul. Gary Windass learned about the events of New Year's Day 2022 and didn't take kindly to Craig using the death of Ted Spear to imprison his little sister Faye. To recap, after Faye accidently knocked over Ted on a driving lesson with Emma Brooker he had seemed okay and they helped him home.
But when the girls returned to check on him, they found him dead in his chair. Consumed with guilt, Emma attended his funeral where she met his grandson Jon and later fell in love with him.
Meanwhile, Faye caved and confessed all to Craig. Wanting to make sure Faye didn't return to jail after she was previously jailed for attacking Adam Barlow who she had mistaken for her predator boss Ray Crosby, he agreed to cover up for her and went to retrieve the evidence of her false nail dropped down Ted's sink.
When Jon found out the truth, he believed Emma and Faye had never meant any harm. After deciding not to take action, he and Emma moved to Australia together and Faye and Craig tried to move on, well, until now.
Back with Paul and Billy, Paul was overcome with sorrow as his devastating diagnosis hit home. As Billy talked adoption, Paul collapsed in tears.
Elsewhere, there was a first experience of heartbreak for Hope Stape. The young firestarter graduated to explosions instead tonight as she jealously messed with boyfriend Sam's science experiment at new friend Eliza's birthday party. Thankfully there was no harm done, apart from a swift and brutal dumping.
After being given the heave-ho by Sam over her meddling, her tearful little face showed the realisation that she may have finally gone too far and ended her experience of first love.
But Rita Tanner lifted the mood in her inimitable stoic style. She could have been delivering a message for the whole street as she told Gemma: "Shall I tell you what to do when times are tough? Have a sing-song, have a knees up and leave your troubles at the door."
