Coronation Street fans were surprised to see a Benidorm star make an appearance on the Cobbles tonight.
Tony Maudsley - best known to ITV viewers as hairdresser Kenneth Du Beke from the popular comedy show - already has a regular role on the Cobbles, where he plays George Shuttleworth, but fans tuning into tonight's show were surprised to see another Benidorm star on the Street as Maria's political ambitions continued to grow.
Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) has been busy working on her political campaign to be made a local councillor for Weatherfield, and in a special press event, she called the local reporters to join her as she planted a tree.
However, she was soon interrupted by rival Bernard Barnes, who brought along two footballers and stole all the attention off of Maria, who was fuming. Annoyed, she desperately sought some help from Phill on how she could beat her rival.
Bernard was played by the creator of Benidorm, Derren Litten and fans watching the show this evening took to Twitter to share their surprise at seeing the Benidorm star on the show.
"That bloke is the creator of Benidorm comedy #Corrie," one wrote.
A second added: "It’s @DerrenLitten, the creator of Benidorm on #Corrie," as a third shared: "Just spotted you on #Corrie."
"Shame no onscreen reunion with @TonyMaudsley1 #DREAMTEAM," a fourth admitted.
Derren announced his appearance in the ITV soap, just hours before his scenes aired.
"Bernard Barnes makes a brief appearance on @itvcorrie this evening (and a bit more on Monday). I can’t express how honoured I am to be even a speck on dust on timeline that is the longest running television soap opera in the world - Coronation Street," he penned.
Samia previously spoke of her character's huge political ambition.
"After what happened to Maria's son, Liam, in the summer with his asthma, it's happened organically. I get why she's doing it," she said as she discussed her character's plan to run for office.
"She's in this for the right reasons, so I think Maria has integrity and would probably make a much better councillor than [election rival] Sally Metcalfe, who is driven by status and feeling important. But maybe I'm biased!"
