Corrie fans praise soap for raising awareness as Summer is given health diagnosis which will see her rebel

Coronation Street fans have praised the soap for raising awareness after Summer Spellman was given some serious health news.

Viewers have seen the teenager, played by Harriet Bibby, struggling following the hate attack on Nina Lucas and Seb Franklin as well finding exam pressure stressful.

Guardian Billy Mayhew has expressed concern for Summer.

He expressed concern, alongside Todd Grimshaw, that she had an eating disorder.

But during Monday night's episode following Summer's second collapse, she was diagnosed with type one diabetes.

Summer puts on a brave face and tells Billy and Todd how the doctor has shown her how to check her blood sugar and inject herself with insulin.

But the teen is set to rebel against her diagnosis as she struggles to come to terms with it as well as manage her anxiety.

Summer will be seen refusing to attend her appointment with the nurse as well as guzzle energy drinks when no one is watching.

"Type 1 diabetes is often misunderstood, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to provide clinical advice and support to the Coronation Street team, in their depiction of Summer as she experiences a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.

"It has been fantastic to work with the team at Coronation Street, to ensure that the storyline was approached with people living with type 1 diabetes and their families in mind.
