Coronation Street viewers were left reeling on Monday evening as they finally learnt the secret Spider Nugent has been hiding since returning to the cobbles.
The notoriously ethical character was unveiled as an undercover police officer in shocking scenes amid his apparent continued interest in activism.
However, as he kept up the current protests on the cobbles, it's been revealed there was more to it all along as it was revealed he is a Detective Constable.
The ITV soap revealed he was working on a case as he met up with DS Swain, exposing his role with the police, as he urged her to keep her voice down.
As Spider was asked for information on Toyah Battersby, amid her trial, he was left in a quandary over his loyalties, after the two reignited their romance in recent weeks.
The scenes left Corrie fans were left stunned by the revelation and they took to Twitter to react to the twist.
One wrote: "Ooh! Now that’s a twist I didn’t see coming," as a second posted: "HE’S A COPPER?! did NOT see that coming!!"
A third wrote: "Looks like the whole of Weatherfield police know Spider is undercover," as another said: "Wow Spider is a cracking undercover detective! Genius!"
This comes after actor Martin Hancock spoke to The Mirror and other press to reveal the truth about how Spider ended up working for the police, hitning there was a backstory with big scenes to come.
Martin revealed: “It's just progressing the character and creating new ideas for the character. He is still a very, very committed activist, but he's doing it now from inside the system.
“It's a strange one because there comes a point when you think well, can I get more done within inside that system? I did wonder what the backstory was.
“I can't give too much away. There's quite a powerful backstory as to why Spider joined the police. It's very powerful actually. In my mind, it works, even though he's had a few run-ins himself.”
Martin went on: “There's a few issues in the world today which we're going to address. There is quite nasty stuff going on. We're gonna start dipping into some of that, but at the same time as he's still Spider.
“He's still Spider, he's just getting a bit more radical in a way as what he's doing is going after some really dangerous stuff.”
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
