Corrie fans call for major change to soap as Audrey makes devastating suicide confession

Coronation Street fans were left calling for a major change to the ITV soap as Audrey Roberts gathered with her friends for a birthday tea during Monday’s episode.

Audrey was joined by Ken (William Roach), Rita (Barbara Knox), Roy (David Neilson) and Claudia (Rula Lenska) for a chatty afternoon tea with her closest friends, gathering a number of the ITV soap’s famous faces in a number of epic scenes.

Stephen had confided in Rita over his concern for his mum and the pair had arranged a posh afternoon tea to cheer Audrey up at Debbie's hotel.

The scenes left many fans of the ITV soap emotional as the Weatherfield legends reminisced and gossiped, with several calling on the soap for write more scenes with the group.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “Can we please have more episodes with the four golden oldies? They're brilliant!” as a second chimed: “I could watch an entire week's worth of Corrie, made up entirely of scenes between William Roache, Sue Nicholls, Barbara Knox and David Neilson!”

A third fan wrote: “Having all of these icons in so many scenes tonight is the perfect start to my Corrie week,” while another added: “Oh wow I love seeing the older characters getting a storyline.”

“Proper Corrie tonight with Ken, Rita, Audrey et al. Simply the best,” one said as another added: “We need more Rita, Audrey, Roy and Ken scenes.”

“Really liking the older Corrie characters getting some valued airtime,” a fellow fan cheered as another tweeted: “Audrey, Claudia, Ken, Rita and Roy scenes are absolutely iconic!!”

However, the afternoon turned sombre when Audrey made a devastating confession about her suicide attempt.

Heartbroken Coronation Street viewers watched last month as Audrey collapsed and was rushed to hospital after taking too many sleeping pills.

During a follow-up appointment with Dr Gaddas last week, Audrey insisted that she just miscalculated her pills and that she doesn't need therapy. However, the doctor suggested a course of antidepressants instead.

Over her surprise afternoon tea with her closest friends, Rita recalled that it was Audrey's birthday recently and a cake was brought out by a waiter.

Yet just as they prepared to sing Happy Birthday, Audrey admitted that she tried to kill herself, leaving her friends shocked and devastated by what really happened.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV.
