Corrie fans beg for permanent role for Jodie Prenger as she makes Cobbles debut

Coronation Street fans hailed Jodie Prenger as 'iconic' as she made her Cobbles debut tonight.

The actress and singer arrived on the infamous Cobbles this evening for the latest instalment of the ITV soap, where she is playing cruise worker Glenda Shuttleworth, the sister of undertaker George (Tony Maudsley).

Glenda arrived on the soap tonight, where she immediately had to step in and rescue one of the funeral's, which was going south when George seemingly fell asleep high on painkillers in the funeral car.

Immediately, she had to help - and soon became incredibly popular with Todd and the whole team for her support, with George also thrilled to see her and quickly introduced her to his girlfriend Eileen.

Fans rushed to Twitter to praise Glenda's arrival - and lent their support to actress Jodie.

"It's like this Glenda's, been on the street for ages, she's gonna fit right in, methinks! #Corrie," one fan wrote, as a second added: "It's lovely to see #jodieprenger in #corrie lovely lady."

A third shared: "Glenda? ALREADY ICONIC. #corrie," as a fourth added: "Glenda is already so iconic. I love Jodie welcome to the show." A fifth penned: "Great to see Jodie Prenger on the street. I hope she's here for the long term. #Corrie."

Jodie previously described the role as a "bucket list" moment for her.

"I know I sound like a soppy sod, but it’s been on my bucket list to be in Coronation Street since I was little. It’s an honour, it truly is a very special moment in my life. To be part of something my family and I have loved for so long," she said in a statement as she confirmed she would be taking on the exciting new role.

"And what a character, oh I have to say, total dream part. I can't wait for you all to meet fun and sassy Glenda, George Shuttleworth's sister. I love Tony Maudsley already, what a fella!"

She added: "Your first day on the cobbles is one of the most nerve wrecking experiences you’ll go though and everyone was just so gloriously lovely, kind and welcoming. It was, and is, everything I expected, and more."

Producer Iain MacLeod also said: "Glenda sails in fresh from the cruise ships with a whiff of the exotic, quickly making best friends and enemies in equal measure. The character is loads of fun and has echoes of classic Coronation Street females of old.

"Jodie is a fabulous talent and we are all very excited to have her aboard. She has felt very Corrie since the moment she stepped onto set and I think the viewers will love her."

*Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV.
