Corrie boss teases danger and 'iconic' new scenes ahead as new set unveiled

Coronation Street's set is expanding, with a brand new exterior location for the cast and crew to film around - and now soap boss Iain MacLeod has hinted at big storylines set to unfold there.

The Weatherfield Precinct will provide more outdoor scenes for characters, as well as other locations for the show.

In the new area, there's a park with swings, a slide and a climbing frame - no doubt for the younger members of the cast, and possibly the teens.

Also nearby are new buildings, including some shops and new homes, potentially - but more than anything, Iain revealed the new location means new storylines.

Speaking to The Mirror, Iain hinted at scary scenes unfolding there after dark, while he also touched on a possible new partnership forming thanks to the charity shop which is located in the precinct.

Iain said: "We wanted it to look very Salford, very earthy, very gritty, and the sort of place you might go in the daytime to buy an ice cream, but you might not want to go down there after dark because it might be full of kids up to no good, and all that.

"It's got fun bits like the kids playground, there's an ice cream shop, there's a charity shop which is gonna generate some story for us in the not too distant future, but it's also got the ginnels of doom which is where all the bad stuff happens, all the secret rendezvous, criminal assignations and the rest of it.

"So it's got a little bit of everything and I went around it yesterday and I was thrilled to pieces."

On whether residents could move in to the flats above the shops, he said: "[They] will do. I'm sure you'll appreciate every outside space we want to build for the set, the inside space has to go in the studio somewhere and our studio is full to bursting."

Iain went on to add they are hoping to have residents living there eventually.

But he's more excited about the shops below the flats, and the stories they will generate, with particular reference to the charity shop.

He spilled: "The charity shop, two really core characters are gonna be going in there. We are trying to install it as a new iconic destination on the show."

Speaking of past double acts in other locations, he said: "We are trying to achieve the same sort of thing over time with the charity shop."

It follows a number of additions to the set exterior over the years, including a Co-op, a Costa Coffee, a train station and a police station all in a new area built in 2018.

There's also Victoria Gardens, which features a special tribute bench for victims of the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017.

The latest additions will no doubt bring more drama to the show judging by Iain's comments!

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
