Coronation Street revealed Carla Connor's fate on Friday night, after she was left for dead by killer Stephen Reid - with a temporary exit airing at the end of the episode.
Carla was rescued just in time by another character, as smoke spread quickly around her flat and the oven was on fire.
As huge flames spread out of the open oven, Roy Cropper choked as he moved through the rising smoke to stop the fire before it got any worse.
Carla had been asleep unaware of the danger she was in after being advised to take prescribed diazepam over her recent health woes.
The factory boss has been struggling recently, and believes she may be experiencing severe psychosis again - a few years on from her breakdown.
What she doesn't know is that new nemesis Stephen has been drugging her with LSD for weeks, and this has been the cause of her feeling paranoid and acting out of character.
As Carla slept, Stephen snuck into the flat with her keys that he stole from the factory and set out his deadly plan.
In his bid to get her out of the way and steal Underworld from her, Stephen turned on the grill as Carla slept.
He then left her for dead knowing she would not wake, before sneaking out of the flat and acting as if nothing had happened.
What he wasn't expecting though was for Roy to go and check on his friend, after her partner Peter Barlow had asked him to.
He happened to walk in just as the blaze took hold, and raced over to stop the fire - saving Carla's life, unaware of what Stephen had planned.
Carla left her bedroom confused and panicked as she began choking, and realised her flat was on fire.
As she protested that she hadn't even used the oven Roy managed to stop the fire, before suggesting she may have forgotten about it.
With Stephen's plan possibly thwarted, it certainly raised concerns with Carla and her loved ones about her mental wellbeing, and Carla made a big decision.
She decided she needed to stay in a mental health clinic to "get better" and Peter drove her away from Weatherfield - giving Stephen the chance to take her place as he wanted.
But will someone or even Carla realise what he's up to, and that she wasn't the person who caused the fire?
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
