Coronation Street’s Georgia Taylor has discussed the “huge conflict” between characters Toyah Battersby and Abi Webster on the ITV soap in the wake of a shock pregnancy.
Abi was rushed to hospital after collapsing in agony at the roadside, only to realise to her shock that she was in labour and had been unaware she was pregnant.
The character has turned to drugs again following her split from husband Kevin Webster, after he rumbled her recent affair - but he remains unaware it was with Imran Habeeb.
Soap star Georgia has opened up about upcoming scenes on the soap, when her character will learn who the father of Abi’s (Sally Carman) baby Alfie is.
Since Abi gave birth, Toyah has given her her full support, unbeknownst to her that her partner Imran Habeeb (Charlie de Melo) is the father after a one-night-stand last year.
When the bombshell truth drops, fans expect Toyah will be left devastated and her happiness with Imran and foster daughter Elsie in jeopardy.
Georgia explained: “You have a woman who has given birth to her fourth child and it is the only child she has left and who has given up two children to be adopted, which is something that Toyah would never do.
“And then you have Toyah who obviously can’t have children and is desperate to be a mum. So there’s going to be a huge conflict between them based on that as well.”
She continued: “Toyah is going to have a huge conflict with her own conscience about thinking those things, because fundamentally this is a woman who is damaged and an addict and who she would have helped in a previous life and has been helping.
“To suddenly be faced with the fact that she has this child with Imran will be a huge internal conflict for Toyah because the compassionate side of her would want to sympathise with Abi, and understand the predicament she’s found herself in.
“But when it hurts Toyah, it’s very difficult to be objective about that.”
The Corrie actress described the affair as the “ultimate betrayal” for her character, adding: “It is the most heartbreaking thing that could happen to her.
“The fact that this has resulted in the one thing that she can’t give [Imran], that’s going to hurt on a whole other level.”
Georgia then considered the “battle” in Toyah’s mind over whether or not she would have sympathy for Abi’s situation, adding: “She is bound to be furious but then as things move on, maybe we see a different side where she tries to understand Abi’s position a bit more.”
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV.
