Corrie 10 years ago: Betty's death, Kirsty's abuse and Karl affair scandal

Coronation Street has been on air on ITV for over 60 years, and it is certainly still going strong.

Bosses don't seem to be running out of ideas or storylines either, as there's all sorts ongoing at the moment - from killer secrets, sad deaths and big decisions.

While many of the characters on the soap have been there a long time, some of the newer Corrie residents are loved just as much as the classics.

The same could be said for 10 years ago on the show, back in 2012, with April featuring some huge moments, shocking scandals and the death of a beloved resident.

Betty Williams, played by much-loved actress Betty Driver, had been on the soap since 1969 before her departure in 2011 (ITV)

Betty Williams, played by much-loved actress Betty Driver, had been on the soap since 1969 before her departure in 2011.

Famed for her hotpots in The Rovers, the adored barmaid was a key figure on the show for decades, until she was written out in 2011 - when actress Betty passed away in October of that year, aged 91.

In April 2012, her son Gordon returned to the cobbles and broke the news to residents that Betty had sadly died in her sleep, with it being the end of an era.

Elsewhere in this month, pub owner Stella Price was devastated to learn her husband Karl was in huge debt, and had stolen money from the pub amid his gambling addiction.

She ended up kicking him out leaving him distraught, but he soon fell into the arms of Sunita Alahan, and the pair slept together.

Despite regretting their actions, the pair went on to have a scandalous affair - which by 2013, would lead to Sunita's murder at the hands of Karl.

Elsewhere, David Platt and partner Kylie, who would tragically be murdered in 2016, were at war with his gran Audrey Roberts.

Terry Duckworth was back on the scene and leading his son Tommy astray (ITV)

After she signed the salon over to her grandson, she wasn't pleased with what went on so demanded he give it back to her - which he refused.

Of course David was trying to protect her from Lewis, who he believed was after her money - which would sadly be later proven correct.

In a worrying twist, Audrey went on to suffer a heart attack and was rushed to hospital, and she refused to see David with him blamed for her health scare.

Karl Munro had an affair with Sunita Alahan (ITV)

Simon Barlow was in tears when dad Peter told him his partner Carla was his new mother, and he would no longer need to be in touch with stepmother Leanne.

He managed to keep seeing her in secret and eventually Peter's plans to keep them apart were stopped.

Simon is still close with Leanne now, and he calls her mum - while he also has a close bond with his dad, who is still with Carla despite a few splits along the way.

One of the key storylines of this era was the harrowing abuse that Tyrone Dobbs suffered at the hands of his wife Kirsty Soames.

Kirsty would get angry and last out at Tyrone, verbally and physically attacking him on several occasions, while he did not speak up about it.

The police officer would apologise afterwards and manipulate Tyrone into staying silent and staying with her.

Meanwhile, Terry Duckworth was back on the scene and leading his son Tommy astray - with Tommy's girlfriend Tina very suspicious over his behaviour.
