An inquest has opened into the deaths of two men who were involved in a serious crash on the M1. Harris Gondwe, 38, and Jack Steer, 52, both died at the scene of the collision on January 20 this year.
The multi-vehicle crash closed the motorway for most of the day southbound between junction 26 for the A610 (Nottingham / Eastwood) and junction 25 for the A52 Brian Clough Way (Nottingham / Derby). At Nottingham Council House on Thursday, July 21, inquests into their deaths were opened, with hearings set to take place at a later date.
Mr Gondwe sister's Eliza Mtete previously told Nottinghamshire Live he had been going to areas such as Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent and visiting friends. In a heartfelt tribute, she said: "He was someone who would help absolutely anybody.
"He wouldn't care about a person's colour, how they looked, he wouldn't judge anyone at all. He would do anything for you. He didn't think of himself very often, only other people."
His family raised money to try and get his body transported back to Malawi in order for his family and friends to say goodbye. Mr Gondwe's body was identified by his sister while Mr Steer's body was identified by his wife, the inquest was told.
Fiona Gingell, Assistant Coroner for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, said: "I would like to take this opportunity to express my condolences to family and friends in relation to their sad loss at this very difficult time."
