Coroner to examine death of grandad who crashed into house in Nottinghamshire village

A coroner is to examine the death of a grandad who died after he drove into a house in a Nottinghamshire village. Robert Spencer Crowder, then aged 67, was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident in South Avenue, Rainworth, on August 19 last year.

Emergency services were called out at around 11.10am to reports of a serious collision. Mr Crowder's granddaughter and friend were also in the vehicle during the crash, police said previously.

His granddaughter suffered minor injuries but his friend was taken to hospital with serious injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening. No further injuries were reported. Two other parked cars also suffered damage during the incident. Extensive structural damage was caused to the house which was unoccupied at the time

An inquest was opened into the death of Mr Crowder in a short hearing at Nottingham Council House on Tuesday (February 21). Opening the inquest, Assistant Coroner Nathanael Hartley outlined a provisional cause of death.

The hearing was told that Mr Crowder died of traumatic injuries in a collision, and of heart disease. Mr Hartley said it is "possible" that Mr Crowder's passing was a "natural death".

He said that Mr Crowder was identified by his children - his daughter Donna, and son John Crowder. He added: "I would like to express my sincere condoleances to the family of Robert Crowder."

In a statement released last year, Sergeant Mark Baker, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Robert has tragically lost his life following this incident and our specialist trained officers are working to offer his family support at this incredibly sad time. Our thoughts remain with Robert’s family and friends who have asked for their privacy to be respected at this extremely difficult time."
