Coronation weather forecast: London set for ‘outbreaks of rain throughout the day’

King Charles III’s Coronation is set to be blighted by outbreaks of rain throughout the day on Saturday, Met Office forecasters have said.

Hordes of royal fans have been gathering along The Mall over the last week to guarantee a spot to witness Charles, and Camilla, Queen Consort as they head towards Westminster Abbey.

Although the capital has had a spell of warmer weather, Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said weather fronts from the southwest will provide a more “cloudy and unsettled” outlook on Saturday.

According to the Met Office, Londoners will wake up to overcast conditions with temperatures settling between 11-12C on Saturday morning ahead of the royal procession.

As the King and Queen Consort begin the procession, at 10.20am, down The Mall to Westminster Abbey, showers are likely to begin across the capital although “not every area of London will initially see the rain”, Mr Dixon told the Standard.

“The frequency of showers will increase slightly through the morning and into the early afternoon, some of which, especially in western areas of London, could be more persistent for a time,” he added.

After reaching Westminster Abbey, the pair will then be joined by dignitaries from around the world where the King will be crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

At around 1pm, the pair will return to Buckingham Palace, where although temperatures will rise to 14C, overcast conditions and showers will remain.

Rounding off the ceremony, Charles, Camila and other royals will watch from the palace balcony for the fly-past.

Visibility may be poor, however, as Mr Dixon added that “rain is still likely to be in the area “with cloudy conditions also likely to persist” for the rest of the day.

He concluded: “Despite the damp outlook, there will be some occasional drier interludes in the day, such is the nature of the showers, but an unsettled picture is certainly the theme for the day.”

On Sunday, Londoners can expect continued overcast conditions although the Met Office predicts fewer showers through the day. Temperatures may even reach a high of 19C, the forecaster predicts.

On Bank Holiday Monday, the forecaster predicts cloudy weather with outbreaks of rain and a high of 16C.
