Coronation Street stars' confessions from fake kisses to secret rules

Coronation Street is the UK's longest-running soap, with more than six decades on prime time television.

The popular ITV drama helped launch the careers of some of the nation's best loved actors, including Suranne Jones and Katherine Kelly. However, there are a few secrets and rules that some cast members have let slip over the years.

From going on holidays, to fake kisses, we take a look at Corrie's most shocking off-screen moments, as reported by the Daily Star. One actress even invited her other half to watch her romantic scenes for feed back.

Back in 2021, Tyrone and Aline shared an on-screen kiss, when social distancing guidelines were in place. Or did they?

Covid rules meant people couldn't get too close to anyone outside of their "bubble", but in soap land the show had to go on. Corrie bosses had to come up with a plan to broadcast their smooch to the nation.

Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone, and Ruxandra Porojnicu, who plays Alina, were filmed far away from each other while a real life couple took their place for the kiss. Two extras who shared a support bubble were filmed during the intimate moment on a bench, much to the amazement of Corrie viewers, and the soap's image remained intact.

The crew also had to place actor Sue Devaney, who plays Debbie Webster, and Micheal Le Vell, who plays Kevin Webster, into a covid bubble after they tested negative. The pair were in a scene together where they were trapped in a fridge which was filmed over the course of three days, so precautions were taken as they had to be in very close proximity of each other.

On the subject of being up close with other cast members, Catherine Tyldesley, who played Eva Price until 2018, recently revealed that she invited her husband to watch her sex scenes while filming. She said that he was left embarrassed when she admitted he watches them so that he doesn’t get “jealous”.

The 38-year-old, who is expecting her second child with now husband Tom Pitfield, said she asks his opinion on how she looks during the scenes and that most of her previous relationships “ended because of her job”.

During its six decade reign, the Corrie cast have also been subject to a number of rules and regulations from the show’s bosses. X Factor winner Shayne Ward, who played Aidan Connor, tweeted a picture of himself back in 2016 with the caption: “30 seconds of sun for me, time starts now. Continuity rules.”

As stars have to look the same in every scene, even the slightest hint of sunburn or teeny bit of a tan could ruin the facade. Michelle Keegan also faced the same problem when she jetted off on holiday before filming her departure in 2014.

She told the Manchester Evening News she “needed her tan to fade fast” because Tina was “as white as a sheet”. The cast must also keep the same haircut, style and colour, aren’t allowed to sign up for other shows whilst filming, and are banned from promoting paid sponsorships on their social media profiles.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV and the ITV Hub
