Coronation Street star teases prison twist for Emma Brooker ahead of emotional exit

Coronation Street's Emma Brooker actress Alexandra Mardell has teased how her character will leave the ITV soap, as her dark secret comes to light.

With Corrie keeping her exit plot under wraps, it's been teased a shocking truth could lead to Emma being sent to prison or even see her go on the run - while a third twist could see her head off into the sunset with new love interest Jon.

Alexandra has revealed all on a possible 'happy ever after' for Emma and Jon, that could soon be tarnished once he finds out her involvement in the death of his grandfather Ted.

At the beginning of the year, Emma and Faye Windass were involved in a car accident, as they ran over an elderly man named Ted.

When Ted later died, with his cause of death thought to be linked to the car incident, the girls kept it all a secret.

With the lie hanging over her, Emma is shocked when Jon asks her to move to Australia with him.

Wanting to give it a chance, Emma is keen on the idea - but not only would she be leaving her family behind, there's also her link to Ted's death still yet to be rumbled.

So will her and Faye's secret lead to her being in big trouble when it eventually comes out?

Alexandra has revealed Emma initially doesn't believe Jon's offer could work out, and is instead a fantasy.

Speaking to The Mirror and other press, Alexandra said: "In her head it's just a dream and a whirlwind and she likes the idea of it, but in reality she knows she has got this big secret and a family that she just got in with.

"It’s just an idea and a hope, but in reality she's thinking no, this isn't gonna happen."

She went on regarding what life might be like for Emma if she was sent to prison, over her criminal secret: "It would not be good.

"I feel like she would be targeted straight away. What would be interesting is to see if she went to prison and came back in the future, how she would have changed, how prison life has changed her."

On a future return, Alexandra confessed she would love to see how years away from Weatherfield might have changed her character too.

She explained: "It would be so interesting to see how life experiences have changed her off screen, I don't know, it’s nice to see a more serious side and a grown up Emma, but there's always got to be those ditzy bits that come back.

"You can't have Emma and not have the silly one liners, there’s always got to be an element of that."

Alexandra hasn't ruled out a future return as she confirmed her character would not be killed off.

She told us: "I’m so pleased, I’m really, really pleased. Even saying goodbye was hard enough but that little kind of hope of one day, maybe it’s a possibility I could go back, that keeps you going.

"It’s not goodbye forever, you never know but I’m really glad she wasn't killed off.

"I’m definitely not drawing a line under it. As I say I can see how people stay there for so long, I don't know what the future holds but I'm just so glad Emma is alive and hopefully she remains alive."

The star also revealed she was pleased with her final scenes and her exit plot, but added she was "emotional" and "overwhelmed" on set when it came to wrapping up.

She revealed: "I was so lucky and really pleased that my last scene was my last scene, especially with Covid still lurking around and schedules have been changing.

"I was lucky that happened for me, and I was not expecting it to be that emotional. I knew obviously I was gonna be upset saying bye to everyone.

"As soon as the AD said ‘that's a wrap, that’s Alexandra’s last scene,’ I burst into tears uncontrollably. I could not stop and I didn’t know what was wrong with me.

"I was so overwhelmed and I think all of the support of the cast and crew, being there at that moment as well coming to say goodbye, it really overwhelmed me. I was very upset and sad to say goodbye."
