Coronation Street star Shelley King's life off-screen with actress wife

Shelley King is best known for her role as Yasmeen Metcalfe in Coronation Street.

After joining the long-running ITV soap in 2014, she won a number of awards for her portrayal of a coercive control storyline from May 2019 with her on-screen husband Geoff. Shelley was born in Calcutta, India to her photographer mother Kelly King who worked in the United Kingdom and India.

After relocating to the UK, Shelley made her acting debut in the BBC drama series Angels as Jay Harper in 1975, RSVP Live reports.

She left the show in 1980 and continued to appear in TV shows, including The Jewel in the Crown, Tandoori Nights, King of the Ghetto and The Demon Headmaster.

While her Corrie character has had little luck romantically, Shelley's life away from the cameras could not be more different. The 67-year-old is in a civil partnership with actress and director Trilby James.

Trilby has starred in Poirot, Little Lord Fauntleroy, Casualty, The Broker's Man and Cake. While filming the Geoff storyline, Shelley admitted she was "hell to live with".

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly last year, the Yasmeen star said: "I mean, poor Trilby! Thank goodness she's a wonderful director and actor and understands the process that we all have to go through."

Last summer, Shelley told the Metro she came out to her parents when she was 42. She said the lack of lesbian representation in the media only spurred her to address who she truly was.

She wrote: "I met Trilby, 24 years ago. She had never had a relationship with a woman and it was so difficult for both of us. But almost instantly we had an inexorable attraction. We are soulmates. It’s as if there is an umbilical cord between us.

"It’s not always plain sailing, but the ship will never break. We talk to each other about everything and work problems out together, however difficult. After we got together, I ‘came out’ to my parents aged 42. They were not in the least surprised."
