Coronation Street's Simon Gregson says Steve McDonald should leave Weatherfield

Coronation Street star Simon Gregson thinks Steve McDonald should leave Weatherfield.

Poor Steve - who Simon has played for over three decades - has been having a rough time of it lately, after his daughter Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) was spiked in a nightclub.

He has also just found out that Amy has been secretly dating Jacob Hay (Jack James Ryan), who was previously part of evil Harvey Gaskell's gang and was one of the kids who groomed Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) into getting involved in drug dealing.

And after all that stress, Simon thinks Steve needs a break from the cobbles.

Asked what advice he'd give his character, he told OK! magazine: "My advice would be to go on holiday for a very long time and have a break. I think what he has to do is just watch it from the wings and be there for Amy if needs be. That’s the only thing he can do."

And Simon has teased that there may be some "fractures" starting to appear in the family, especially if Amy continues to see Jacob.

"It will definitely cause fractures, especially with Simon, Leanne and possibly Peter," he added.

It comes after Simon - who took part in the most recent series of I'm A Celebrity - admitted he hated his Corrie fame, as he struggled to cope with the changes in his life after he bagged the role.

During a chat in the castle, he said: "I was 15 when I started filming. 14 when I got the job. They went round loads of different schools in Manchester looking for two young lads to play the McDonald twins.

"And we were sat in assembly and they said there were people here from TV. Which in 1989 was like, 'Oh my god! No way!' I was like, 'I'm going to check this out.'"

Explaining how he'd probably be racing cars if he wasn't an actor, he added: "It was difficult for a while to adjust. This isn’t what I planned for myself and I do not like it. I hated it. The fame side of it I hated it. I still don’t."
