It is thought she is filming her exit scenes later this month and will officially exit in April.
Sharing a statement to Twitter, she said: "Playing Emma, on the most iconic street there is, has been the best experience of my life.
"4 years has gone so fast. Compared to other cast members, I still feel like newbie, which makes my decision to leave all the more difficult.
"But now is the right time as a number of exciting opportunities beckon. Although who knows, maybe the street hasn't seen the last of Emma Brooker.
"I can't thank everyone at Coronation Street enough for welcoming me and trusting me to tell so many wonderful and heartfelt stories. And of course for the friendships and the amazing fans. When I see pink, I will always think of Emma."
It's unclear what the exciting opportunities coming to Alexandra are but it is clear she'll be dearly missed by Coronation Street fans.
Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeon said: 'Emma has found herself in a massive pickle — one which will cause her to wave goodbye to the cobbles. At least for now. Alexandra has been pure Corrie gold and I wish her all the best.'
Emma was Steve McDonald's secret daughter and had some dramatic storylines including surviving a roof collapse and a string of heart-breaking relationships.
The character is currently at the centre of a dramatic storyline after Faye Windass knocked down a pensioner during a driving lesson with Emma who had had too much to drink.
