Coronation Street's David Platt may be forced to turn off Shona Ramsey's life support as she was declared 'brain dead' tonight.
It seems David will become a widower for a second time as Shona's condition drastically deteriorated in a devastating twist.
Shona was shot with a bullet in the stomach while hiding in a big Christmas present during a scuffle between Gary Windass and gunman Derek Milligan.
After appearing to be recovering well, Shona was rushed to surgery because of a bleed and her brain was starved of oxygen.
After performing a CT scan and some reflex tests, the doctor broke the devastating news to David that his wife had no brain activity.
When David asked if she was brain dead, the doctor replied: "All I can ask is pray for the best but prepare for the worst."
The heartbreaking episode, which also saw Michelle Connor leave the cobbles, ended with a montage that included David breaking down while holding onto Shona.
Devastated Coronation Street viewers took to Twitter to plead with bosses to save Shona's life.
One fan said: "Little to no brain activity. Noooooooooooooooooooo, Shona we need you back"
"Such a shame poor Shona it isn’t fair I loved her," added another.
A third said: "OMG so Shona's basically totally brain dead really?"
"I’m confused is Shona leaving for good or not? Sounds like she’s going to die," said a fourth.
Corrie fans are also worried that David will not survive without Shona - having already lost Kylie when she was stabbed by Clayton.
In agreement, Nick said: "She’d better wake up. I don’t think he will survive going through this again."
Shona will be departing the ITV soap as actress Julia Goulding is currently on maternity leave after welcoming her baby son in November.
But given Shona's condition, it's not clear how she will leave and whether she will ever return to the cobbles.
The actress recently teased on Lorraine that she would be back after a brief break - but this has not confirmed by the soap yet.
Will Shona make it out alive?
