Coronation Street newcomer fans may recognise from rival soap

A newcomer to the Cobbles is set to sweep one Weatherfield resident off their feet.

Frank Bardsley has been announced as the soap's newest character. It is not yet known when viewers will first see him on screen, but his first scenes were filmed around two months ago.

And many soap fans will recognise him from somewhere, as Frank is played by former Brookside star Simon O'Brien. Simon, who hails from Garston, is best known for playing Brookie's Damon Grant for some five years in the 80s.

He is also known for starring in Grange Hill and Fraggle Rock, as well as having smaller roles in Casualty, Heartbeat and The Bill.

Corrie bosses shared the news on Thursday. A tweet from the soap's official account said: "Welcome, the newest member of the team, Frank Bardsley, played by Simon O'Brien!

"Could love be in the air for a lucky someone on The Street?"

Fans of the show were quick to comment. Maggie said: "Oh please let it be Mary, she deserves love and fun and Frank looks a tad cheeky and would suit Mary".

Lisa Harte said: "Aw bless, he'll always be Damon to me", to which Patricia Timberley replied: "Same". Nikki said: "YAY - my absolute favourite...can't wait to see Simon on the Street." Caryn said: "A Scouser... please tell me he's gonna be George's secret husband!".

Digital Spy, however, reports Frank will be a love interest for Sean Tully. A Corrie insider is said to have told Digital Spy: "While Sean is smitten, there may be more to Frank than meets the eye. Frank went to school with local undertaker George Shuttleworth, who knows details about his past and is wary of him."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and the ITV Hub
