Coronation Street Mike Baldwin star's death, Ken Barlow jibe and disowned daughter

Mike Baldwin is one of Coronation Street's most iconic figures.

The wheeler dealer was played by Johnny Briggs - and was a mainstay on the Cobbles for three decades.

The businessman arrived on Weatherfield in 1976 and was a key part in some of the soap's most famous story-lines.

Mike's rivalry with Ken Barlow gripped the nation as the two both vying for the affection of Anne Kirkbride's Deirdre.

The dramatic love triangle started in 1982 and developed into a lifelong feud between the two characters.

Mike's tenure on Coronation Street came to a sad end in 2006 when he died in the arms of his old foe after suffering a heart attack.

Away from the screen, Johnny led a similarly rollercoaster life to his on-screen character as he once responded to Ken Barlow actor, Bill Roache's, claims he had slept with 1,000 women with a cheeky jibe aimed at his Corrie rival.

He said: “What goes on in the bedroom stays in the bedroom. I was a bit of a ladies’ man myself.

"I don’t know if I can say how many I’ve bedded, but it’s probably more than him.”

Johnny was married twice in his lifetime and was a dad to six children.

However, his complicated relationship with daughter Karen repeatedly hit the headlines as she has been arrested multiple times.

According to the Mirror, she suffered with heroin addiction and Johnny disowned her.

Karen Briggs and her daughter, Emma Beach, were barred from every shop in their home in Surrey together for two years after racking up more than 48 convictions, mostly for shoplifting.

Johnny fell out of love with Corrie following his exit from the show and told the Mirror in 2011 how he thought the show had become unwatchable.

He said: "There’s no laughter or humour. The Duckworths have gone, Hilda Ogden is gone, the comedy and drama is dead.

“People were once happy in the soap. There is no one in it I recognise now."

The soap star died in real life in February last year from a long illness at the age of 85 - and Ken Barlow actor William Roache was one of the first to pay an emotional tribute to the soap star.

He said: "Mike Baldwin and Ken Barlow were arch enemies for many years, but as an actor, Johnny was impeccable, always good, and I was so fortunate to have worked with him for so many years.

‘He was a strong character who will be greatly missed. I send my love to Johnny on his journey and to all those who are bound to miss him, he was an iconic Coronation Street character.

‘Love you Johnny!"

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV and ITV Hub
